Edition overview

Working groups: combining approaches and points of view

Each year, Forum Avignon develops new studies with research and consulting partners. Across several months, working groups bring together economists, managers, sociologists, public actors and artists to examine a shared question from multiple perspectives.

The 2012 programme focused on the pressures and possibilities created by digital change: faster circulation of information, new forms of participation, evolving cultural professions and the continuing importance of imagination and transmission.

The studies of the 2012 edition

Research study · Ernst & Young

Which tempo for cultural content?

The study considered how the rapid growth of online information and digital supply was changing the rhythm of production, distribution and discovery in cultural and creative industries. It explored the challenge of keeping technological innovation connected to sustainable cultural and media ecosystems.

Its analysis looked across twelve countries and considered how access to content, movement between platforms and increasingly connected audiences were reshaping the media environment.

Which culture and which cultural contents do digital generations receive, create and pass on?

Drawing on professional and university perspectives, this study examined how digital tools influence imagination, cultural participation and the transmission of heritage among younger generations. It considered both continuities and changes in the ways culture is encountered, made and shared.

Reasons to hope through culture and creative imagination

Based on conversations with international cultural actors, the study identified experiences and practices in which culture and creative imagination can support confidence, renewal and collective possibility. It asked what conditions allow those experiences to take root and be sustained.

Research study · Kurt Salmon

The factory of culture

This study mapped changing processes and emerging professions across the cultural life cycle. It explored how innovation affects creation, production and distribution, and how new practices alter the skills and organisational models required by creative industries.

Imagination and transmission: creators of value

Looking at music, books, audiovisual work, games and connected devices, the study considered whether new technologies were creating use, economic, social and cultural value. Research across eight countries highlighted lasting patterns in cultural consumption and the continuing role of diversity in value creation.

Its forward-looking work treated imagination and transmission as essential parts of how cultural value develops beyond individual platforms or media cycles.
